I was repairing an iPhone 4S for someone and all went well. I reassembled it and turned it on, but the screen was black. At first I thought the battery was flat, but the phone was on and working (the CPU warmed up etc. etc.) I plugged it into my computer and it makes the sound that any iOS7.x.x makes when you start charging it. Thing is it makes this sound every 10 seconds or so as if i’m plugging and unplugging it. The screen is still black all through this. I assumed that the LCD was dead. (at this point I’d tried cleaning the connections, reseating the connections, blowing the phone out with an air canister, restarting the phone, resetting the phone. (I haven’t restored it as it’s not mine and refuse to do it without permission for obvious reasons). None of this has worked. I gave up and fixed a few more things by this point the battery had ran dead and I plugged in a new 4S screen that I had lying around. I held down the lock button and it worked, the phone showed the “needed charging” icon so I plugged it in and let it charge for 30 minutes. I came back and all was working well, so I unplugged that screen and plugged in the installed one, and truth be told the screen was black again. I plugged in the other screen and it was black too. I tried 2 more (cracked but working) screens and they were black also. I replaced the battery and it was still black. If it was a faulty LCD why would it not work with the other screens? If it was a damaged motherboard why would it work, not work, work, then not work again? I’m baffled. It’s also recognised in iTunes, but has a password (which I have, but I don’t know exactly what I’m pressing so unlocking it is a pain)! Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is the first time it’s happened and i’ve fixed probably 40 iPhone 4S’s. Thanks in advance! :)
If the connectors are 100% connected and still the vibrating and bonging its a new screen you need have seen this 100 times over
I have just had this issue as well, the beeping indicates that one or more of the internal hardware components have failed. check the ribbon cables for camera, battery, lcd, and anything with more then 3 wires into it. if you notice any frays, cracks or exposed copper under the plastic ribbon cable (technically these are called “flexible circuit boards”), then the component has failed and must be replaced. the phone puts itself into a safe voltage state so that nothing else will get damaged if a fault is detected. this safe voltage state is enough to run a back light and the logic board and will cut off at any sign of a short. the phone, after the battery has been plugged in, with the wall charger connected,it will go through a self initialization mode and take about 3 minutes to complete (this is indicated it has started when the phone vibrates a couple of times) during this time it tests all of the separate components and goes into a GO/NO-GO checklist. If any component is a no go, it halts the phone in its safe state and alerts the user every 10 seconds with a charging sound indicator. Now, on most of these phones, they get dropped,thrown, etc. (if you suspect impact damage at all, this is most likely the cause) The only cables that are not screwed down with a backing plate is the LCD cable and digitizer cable, accessible at the top when the cover is slide off. Disconnect the battery, re-seat these cables, wait 3 minutes and plug the battery back in. wait for the initialization phase to complete. if this does not resolve the issue, a complete tear down will be needed to analyse all the components for any signs of damage. here is a good link for that tear down. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trvPAtkp… Hope everything works out for you.
I have same issue. But I could turn on display just by using power button + home button . Try this: press power button + home button for 5 sec then just release and again press power button + home button for 5 sec. Do this 4-5 times you may get apple symbol in screen. I started facing this issue after ios 8 update. So I think its not hardware related.
I have run into a similar issue on iphone 4 models. In my case I found that if any connector gets disconnected(specifically the digitizer in my case) simply reconnecting it was not sufficient, but disconnecting then reconnecting the battery was also necessary, I am not sure why except that I know if the screen plug comes out(like happens so easily when testing with a screen that not uninstalled) it never comes back on until the phone reboots, and I suspect thats nearly impossible except by unplugging the battery, once the screen goes blank. I suspect there is some kind of initialization process that must be repeated before a screen will come back of after being disconnected.
This happened to med as Well on a costumers cellphone, connecting to iTunes and restore worked =) Then i realized i had pulled off The camera and that was why it wouldnt turn on and constantly vibrating
Yeah I have the same issue that is i have tried every thing i know its not the screen because i swaped a icloud logic board and the screen functions 100%%%%%%
Also had this problem/symptoms, came here and decided to break down the phone checking every step the connectors were well connected. When the four screw metal cover came out I discovered the right side LCD display connector was loose, it had popped out when my daughter dropped her 4S, connected it back, reassembled immediately and the phone was back working. I was lucky that was it, i’ve changed 4S screens several times in the last years (we now just have this one the rest are iphone 6) and that’s a pain specially the corner screws! Didn’t have to suffer that pain :)
