Chosen Solution

I have an iPad 4 on which everything works except the microphone. I leapt to the conclusion that it was a broken microphone, ordered a new one, and replaced it. That did not solve the problem. Everything else on the iPad works fine. I’ve tried a soft then a hard reset but to no avail. It is running iOS 10.3.3 Has anyone run into this problem before? What are the odds this is a software problem?

The replacement microphone may be defective. Small parts have a higher failure rate, although iFixit is good with QC. Perhaps the issue is with the “hole” in the housing. It may be clogged up with dust/lint etc and that may be causing the issue. The problem may also be on the Headphone Jack board (see this guide). Perhaps the connector is damaged on the board or on the flex side of things.
