My imac has developed a problem. the machine can be working fine but suddenly a dark horizontal line appears and a message appears on screen asking me to shut down the computer or press restart. This is called a Kernel Panic. It can be cause by software and/or hardware problems. To help diagnose your issue, start up from your original system installation disk (restart with the disk in, and hold down the “D” key till the Apple logo appears and run the AHT (Apple Hardware Test5) and let us know your results. Restart from the installation disk and hold down the “C” key, go to the second screen pull down menu to utilities > Disk Utility and see if you can repair you hard drive then repair your permissions.
