Hi, I have a NEC PE401H projector. One of its fans has failed (the projector was saying `fan locked’ for a little bit, and now will not turn on at all). I have removed the covers, but cannot work out how to get the fans out. The fan that has failed is one of two in an assembly mounted between the lamp housing (empty in this picture) and the main board. It looks as if I have to remove the entire main board to be able to remove the fan assembly. My main worry is I don’t want to disturb the optical path at all, and I don’t know how it’s all connected under the board.

My projector M260X also was showing fan problem with 6 red blips by the status indicator. Upon checking I found one of centrifugal fan is not running. I did not pull out the fan. Instead I released the connector tab from the motherboard. After inspecting, I found the fan has 3 wires, Red, black and white. I cut the red wire and black wire and connected to a laptop 12volt adapter to the red (+12v) and black (-) wire. The fan started to run. Remember the white wire is for relay of fan status to the motherboard. Then, I pulled out two points from another 12v fan connection from the fan and connected the former fans +ve end to the 2nd fans +ve wire and (-)ve to the (-) terminal. On powering, the both fan starts to run and projector turned on. In your case, if the fan is found to be bad, the just remove the mother board only. You will be able to pull out the fan without disturbing the optical portion.
