Need to replace rope start. 3 nuts holding rope start are not releasing and bolts are turning with nuts. Model PH-XT675-2011

Jim, not quite sure where you are stuck. Attached image shows the individual parts for the top cover. Also, take a look at this decent video on here The service manual describes it as “Remove Engine Cover Insert (if equipped) and Cover NOTE: Whenever possible, an impact wrench should be used to loosen nuts securing retractable starter.

  1. Remove Torx screws securing engine cover insert.
  2. Remove nuts securing engine cover. Remove engine cover. Remove Engine Cover and Retractable Starter (if equipped) NOTE: Whenever possible, an impact wrench should be used to loosen nuts securing retractable starter. Remove nuts securing engine cover and retractable starter. Remove engine cover and retractable starter. It is possible that all three studs have come loose when you tried to remove the three nuts. In that case it’ll be a bit tough and you would have to try to take the engine cover off with it. Continue to turn the studs to see if they unscrew from the engine and apply some upward pressure on the cover.

If you take out all screws on the engine cover and you still can’t get it off because it feels like there’s still something holding it in the front, peel the sticker on it from the bottom and you should find a square slot. It’s a clip. Stick a screwdriver in the slot and push the clip towards the back side of the mower.

Yes unfortunately do you have to poke a hole or at least cut a portion out of the decal but if you run your finger there you’ll find the outline and use a razor knife as I did and you’ll see what’s underneath. A slotted screwdriver pushes the tab back which makes it easy to lift the cover off…
