I got in the capacitor kits, opened up a couple of different iMac G5 power supplies only to find them packed with gray silicon rubber adhesive. No wonder these things overheated. The question is: is there some easier way of getting this crude out other than cutting, picking and pulling?

The only stuff that I know of is Acetone. Of course not sure how the electronic components and the PCB will hold out to that. 3M makes a product that the boaters down here use. It’s a citrus based adhesive remover and they say it takes of the silicon adhesive used in boating. It’s a sticky situation with the components but worth a try. Good Luck.

You could pick a small piece off and test alcohol and other safe solvents on it. You would be looking for a reaction that would allow you to peel the stuff off. Of course ideally it would dissolve. Good luck with it and plus for the question–never an easy answer.
