The internal optical drive has quit accepting and mounting discs of all types - it will take one in, then just eject it after a few seconds. The disc image never shows on desktop, and no software will recognize it. The optical drive (“superdrive”) is an OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H: Firmware Revision: 3AHB Interconnect: ATAPI Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive) and is shown by the system as “grayed out”. I want to replace the drive with a second HDD, but hesitate to buy the parts before knowing why it shows this problem! I need to know the bay wiring and controller interface are okay… All help would be appreciated!! Thanks, Craig

Very rarely does the motherboard connector or wiring go bad. Optical drives are basically the most fragile parts of any mac. The issue you have described above is the same issue I have had with 75% of all the optical drives I have replaced and it has always been the optical drive and not the motherboard. If you want to test it, go to your utilities folder and go to Disk Utility. Does the Superdrive show up in the sidebar? Does it display the drives info? If it does both then it’s most likely your mechanical system in the optical drive and not the motherboard and wiring. Tell us what you find so we can provide further assistance. Hope this Helps
