  • It may depend on the age and quality of your notebook, such as it being a high and or low-end machine
  • It may depend on how much do you use it and where do you use it What’s puzzling to me that I haven’t found any guidance on Apple’s web site of the whole issue, have you? Or, according to Apple, you shouldn’t be bothered about cleaning the fan at all, until it gets broken? Have you found guidance in the service manuals of any other brands of notebooks? Additional tidbits as they relate to one brand new make: MacBook Pro 2016 Teardown.

Doc, How often to clean the fan of your Apple or generic notebook/laptop. Depends on how much you use it and the environment you use it in. Maybe start cleaning it monthly and if not noticeably dirty go to every 3 months, if still seams pretty clean and no heat issues go to 6 month intervals, etc., Remember though when you increase usage( going from 1 hr/day to 3-4 hrs) or change environment (from working on dust free desk to sitting on your bed) you will have to start the evaluation all over again to see what dust, dirt, debri, the computer fan and board picks up. Good luck on your evaluation. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.
