Bought a used 2006 Mac Pro to tinker with for a good price only to then have it smell like cigarettes when running due to one of the previous owners smoking habits. How do I remove or mask this awful cigarette smoke odor without damaging the desktop?

Have you wiped down the external case fully with wet wipes or 85% isopropyl alcohol dampened lint free towel? Being careful not to get the cleaner into the switches & sockets. I would have started with that as most of the tars & oils will have stuck to it. You will also need to dust out the internals using a soft paint brush and a can of can’ed air. You’ll want to wipe the fan blades down with cotton swabs (Q-Tip) with 85% isopropyl alcohol and any of the internal surfaces that look stained.
