Chosen Solution
Due to the power lead being inadvertently pulled on my Lenovo G580, I think it may have damaged the charging port because there seems to be no feed to the battery now, even with a brand new lead.
depending on which side of the laptop the USB is on will determine how hard they are to replace. the right side ports are independent of the motherboard but the left side are soldered to the board so if its a left side port you will need to solder in a new one but if its on the right you can buy and replace the unit .
