I have tried 2 WD Blue HDDs and a 860 QVO Samsung SSD so I don’t think it is the fault of the hard drive and I have also tried a Mountain Lion installer and the Catalina installer....

As clues on the possible cause of my issue, I can say removing the battery was quite difficult due to the strong glue; I only applied force on the places shown on the tutorial video, and avoiding the area around the pull tab, but now that I have also read the text guide, I see it actually suggested to pry only at the outside edge of the phone (not the 3 places in the video) In any case, now the battery works ok; it charges normally and is not otherwise “stuck”; it can last for a long while even playing a youtube video at maximum brightness, for example....
